On offer is a charming pair of Staffordshire pugs dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. A classic example of Victorian-era "hearth dogs," such figures were commonly placed on fireplace mantels as decorative accents.
These ceramic dogs are realistically modeled in a seated position on their haunches. As exemplified here, typical characteristics for such pieces include painted amber or yellow eyes, expressive eyebrows, a black painted muzzle and collar with tag—the latter in this case formerly highlighted with gilt. Soft brown shading enhances the animals’ ears and feet.
The "crackle" finish, or crazing, is a result of the aging process in the pottery's glaze over time.
As with this duo, authentic antique pieces frequently feature a vent hole at the base and are often unmarked.
Signature/Maker’s mark: Nonexistent.
Individual figure dimensions. Pug #1: 6.5”w x 7”d x 11”h and Pug #2: 5”w x 7”d x 10.75”h.
