A hand-thrown studio pottery bowl by California ceramicist Hysong, produced within the Northern California studio pottery tradition of the mid-to-late twentieth century. The bowl is executed in iron-rich stoneware and finished in a reduction-fired glaze that creates dramatic tonal shifts from warm brown to olive and amber with characteristic speckled iron spotting.
The interior reveals natural glaze variation produced by kiln atmosphere and firing conditions, emphasizing the expressive qualities of clay and flame. The restrained profile and functional proportions reflect the influence of Japanese Mingei aesthetics that shaped much of the California craft movement.
Signed to the base, the piece represents the tradition of handmade utilitarian ceramics produced by regional studio potters throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains and San Jose ceramics community.
