It features an engraved signature on the side.
This sculpture is part of the famous ‘Le Maschere’ (or ‘I Visaggi’) series, originally conceived by Ponti and later produced in metal, often in collaboration with leading companies such as Sabattini or Lino Sabattini. The sharp lines forming the eyes, the ‘L’-shaped nose and the mouth are his stylistic signature, whilst the two long points extending upwards recall the shape of his famous obelisks.
Giovanni Ponti, known as Gio, was one of the most important figures in the artistic landscape of the twentieth century. An architect, industrial designer, artist and publisher, he is considered one of the fathers of modern architecture in Italy. Gio Ponti used to draw and design tirelessly, even late into the night, on trains and even on aeroplanes. It was rare to see him without paper and pencil. He devoted himself to architecture and painting as well as to design, interior design and architecture.
Gio Ponti’s furniture, lamps and other products, despite some having been in existence for almost a century, are still considered timeless today and represent truly iconic pieces of modern design.
