A finely painted Japanese Imari porcelain dish dating to the late Edo to early Meiji period, featuring a dynamic phoenix (ho-o) rendered in iron red, gilt, and soft green enamels.
The composition is particularly successful, with the sweeping tail of the phoenix extending across the surface in a fluid, asymmetrical arc that enlivens the form. Surrounding panels are arranged in a lobed, petal-like structure and decorated with stylized floral and karakusa motifs, alternating with patterned reserves in iron red and green.
The rim is defined by a deep cobalt blue ground embellished with flowing gilt scrollwork, creating a rich contrast against the lighter interior. Opposite the phoenix, a secondary floral medallion balances the composition.
The exterior is decorated in underglaze cobalt with simple floral sprigs, interspersed with iron red and gilt bat motifs—a traditional symbol of good fortune—adding a subtle decorative layer when viewed in profile.
The foot is neatly finished with concentric underglaze blue rings, and the form shows a gentle outward pinching that echoes the lobed rim.
A strong and visually striking example of Imari ware, equally suited for display or collection.
