The elephant — a revered symbol of power, wisdom, and good fortune throughout Southeast Asia — is depicted in a ceremonial seated posture, trunk raised high in the classic gesture of auspicious welcome. The form is built from terracotta and enveloped in a thick, luminous sage-green celadon glaze that pools beautifully in the carved recesses, deepening the surface detail. Fine crazing across the glaze lends the piece the quiet authority of age and artisanal authenticity.
Every surface rewards close inspection. Intricate incised decoration suggests full ceremonial regalia — an elaborately patterned saddle blanket and harness rendered with the kind of precision that speaks to a craftsman’s pride.
