A striking life-size Italian ceramic sculpture of a seated Rough Collie. Modeled with a high degree of naturalism, the figure captures the breed’s characteristic elongated muzzle, full ruff, and alert yet gentle expression.
Finished in a warm palette of golden browns, whites, and soft umber tones, the high-gloss glaze enhances the sculpted fur and brings subtle depth to the surface. Pieces of this scale—standing just over 30 inches high—were produced primarily by Italian ceramic workshops in the 1960s and 1970s. Substantial in size and visually engaging, this collie works well as a floor sculpture beside seating, in an entry, or as a distinctive accent within a layered interior. It reads equally as a nod to traditional animal sculpture and as a playful counterpoint in more contemporary settings.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
What’s not to love about this piece?
It’s engaging and warm, with a presence that feels immediate but not overpowering. At this scale, it reads as sculpture first—something that anchors a space rather than simply decorating it. I appreciate how comfortably it moves between styles. It feels just as at home in a traditional setting as it does in a more contemporary interior, where it adds a bit of character and softness. And being Italian only adds to the appeal.

Surface presents well with a consistent high-gloss finish. Minor, age-appropriate wear consistent with use, including light surface marks and subtle variations to the glaze. No major cracks or structural damage observed. The underside retains an older gray felt covering, typical of Italian examples of this period, likely applied to protect flooring and potentially covering original markings. less
