Chinese Export Armorial Porcelain Dish,
Arms of Hugget impaling Randolph,
Circa 1755
A fine Chinese Export porcelain armorial dish, produced during the Qianlong period (circa 1755) for the British market.
The deep, oval dish features a lobed rim edged in gilt and decorated with four delicate polychrome floral sprays. The central well is dominated by a large, hand-painted coat of arms in opaque enamels, depicting the marital union of two families.
The Arms: The shield displays the arms of Hugget (Quarterly) impaling Randolph (Sinister: Gules, on a cross Argent five mullets Sable). The crest above depicts a stag's head.
The Motto: A banner below the shield bears the Latin inscription "IDEM VELLE QUOD VULT DEUS", translating to "To want the same thing that God wants".
The cavetto is framed by an intricate iron-red and gilt chain or bamboo-style border, typical of the mid-18th century export wares.

Historical Context:
This service is a classic example of the bespoke "China Trade" porcelain commissioned by British families in the 18th century to display their lineage and status. The impaled arms signify a marriage between the Hugget and Randolph families. The piece is documented in David Sanctuary Howard's definitive reference work on the subject.
