Originally designed in 1931 for the Paimio Sanatorium in Finland. Aalto aimed to create a chair that promoted patient well-being through functionalism and organic beauty. The angle of the backrest was specifically intended to help patients breath more easily.
The seat is comprised of a single piece of laminated bent birch plywood - the curvature coupled with the four points where its affixed to the frame created the "first soft wooden chair".
Acquired from the children of the original owners - whose parents purchased the chair in the late 1970s. In all original condition, displaying a gorgeous patina and time honored wear. All joinery is sound and secure. Thoughtfully cleaned and conditioned and ready for use. See less
