Stamped “Hunzinger” and “Pat. April 18, 1876,” this American Aesthetic Movement walnut rocker features Hunzinger’s patented woven steel seat and back construction. Crafted in walnut, the architectural frame reflects the refined geometry of late 19th-century Aesthetic Movement design. Squared uprights, subtle block crest details, and an elongated open stretcher lend sculptural balance.
The chair features Hunzinger’s celebrated 1876 patent for an improved seat and back construction utilizing woven steel bands in place of traditional caning or upholstery supports. The original textile covering remains over the steel web and shows age-appropriate fraying, revealing the innovative structural system beneath.
Hunzinger, a German-born cabinetmaker active in New York, was among the most inventive American furniture designers of the Centennial era. His patented seating designs represent an important intersection of Victorian era aesthetics and early industrial engineering.
