Neighboring towns of Tlaquepaque … Read more Artisan made, this set of petite terracotta nesting bowls is from the Mexican state of Jalisco. Neighboring towns of Tlaquepaque and Tonalá have formed the epicenter for fine pottery creation in this region of Mexico since the mid-1600s.

Unlike more rudimentary tourist-market pottery, these folk art bowls are more delicate and more artfully designed. The interiors are finished in a semi-gloss glaze while the exteriors are unglazed. A painted rim separates the two. The largest of the set boasts 2 handles; the other 4 smaller items have 1 each.

Despite the fineness of the clay bodies, we find no cracks, no glaze flaking; only a few rough edges where the glaze was either missed or worn away. A lovely set for any collector of Mexican redware or artisan fabricated pottery.

Very good vintage condition with no cracks, minimal glaze roughness/loss on edges.
