The Toyotomi clan was a Japanese clan that ruled over the Japanese before the Edo period. The most influential figure within the Toyotomi was Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the three "unifiers of Japan" in 1590. Kamon (家紋), are Japanese emblem used to decorate and identify an individual, a family, or (more recently) an institution, municipality or business entity. The mon of the Toyotomi clan, now used as the emblem of the Japanese Government; originally an emblem of the Imperial family—a stylized paulownia. See the 5 kamon on this kimono (3 on back and 2 in front).
This Kimono may have been worn by the a descendant Mother of the Groom at their child’s wedding. It is hand painted with Two Treasure Boats, one with the Ho-o symbol and the other with Dragon. One ship is showing the character of “Treasure”, and the other is showing a Red Crane which symbolizes Fertility and Long Life.
In ancient Chinese and Japanese cultures, they can often be found in the decorations for weddings or royalty, along with Dragons. This is because the Chinese considered the Dragon-and-Phoenix design symbolic of blissful relations between husband and wife, another common yang and yin metaphor. Collectors sometimes refer to it as Hoho Bird, a name derived from Ho-o. Ho-o is simply the Japanese pronunciation of Fenghuang.
Period (when made): Late Meiji/early Taisho (1910-1920).
Provenance: Maeda family private collection. Japan-Nagasaki prefecture.

This is a collectors’ item, authentic and unique. Many different factors determine prices. First: age, rarity, and condition. Second: aesthetics. Since in Japan the best Kimonos have always been considered textile art, Kimono prices can vary as much as do prices on paintings. Thus, beautiful, rare and unique Kimonos command a premium.
Interested buyers are highly encouraged to ask all necessary questions before their purchase. Thank you.
