An exceptional pair of mid-century Marcel Breuer B35 cantilever lounge chairs, sourced from the estate of a prominent metropolitan architect. These chairs represent the pinnacle of Bauhaus furniture design, featuring the coveted short beechwood armrest profile and original metal-domed end caps. These characteristics are hallmarks of the premium European productions by Gebrüder Thonet.
The underside of the chrome tubular skids features original factory-drilled holes, intended for the mounting of Thonet-standard floor glides. This is a detail of mid-century European productions. The chairs are upholstered in heavyweight, full-grain black bridle leather. Notably, the seat and back are tensioned via substantial buckled leather straps on the underside - another high-spec detail found in early-to-mid-century iterations that allows for tensioning and comfort.
While the B35 was first designed in 1928, the production of this pair is estimated to the 1950s based on the specific hardware characteristics and the architectural provenance.

They have been gently cleaned and conditioned once, left otherwise in their honest, found state to preserve the historic condition for the next collector. Frame & Chrome: The tubular steel frames remain bright and highly reflective. Commensurate with their 1950s vintage, there is light pitting and minor surface scuffing visible upon close inspection. The majority of the pinhead-sized pitting is localized to the underside and backside of the tubes, making it unobtrusive when the chairs are in situ. Minor surface oxidation was removed during cleaning. The leather slings and wood armrests remain in their original mounted state to preserve the integrity of the factory assembly, so the metal under these areas was not inspected or cleaned. Leather & Wood: The original heavyweight black bridle leather is structurally sound and retains excellent tension. The leather would benefit from continued conditioning to reach its full luster. There is minor surface-level finish loss (flaking of the black dye) on the underside and along some edges, typical of mid-century hide. The leather was gently cleaned with a pH-neutral solution and treated once with premium German Lederbalsam. The beechwood armrests show light wear consistent with age, featuring a warm, aged amber tone. less
