Robsjohn-Gibbings … Read more An early variant of the JW-1773 Klismos side chair from the 1960s. This chair was purchased with a T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings Bullet desk from a retired representative of The Widdicomb Furniture Company. We were told Widdicomb used both pieces at promotional events throughout the country.

The JW-1773 chair is currently produced by the Stickley Furniture Company under license from Widdicomb. Stickley writes "The passion for classical designs, rekindled by the late 18th and early 19th century excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum, lives on in this modern interpretation of the Greek Klismos Chairs. While firmly rooted in the ancient past, the underlying features of these chairs- the curved top rail and the backrests with scroll designs- reach across the centuries to achieve a fresh refinement for a new millennium." The modern version is only available in cherry.

This chair is the only burl example of this model chair we can find, although other examples will probably surface in the future. The fabric on the front of the chair is a vintage remnant our reupholsterer had saved for over a decade for a special piece. See less
