Creche figures were dressed … Read more 18th Century Neapolitan Crèche Figure of Man wearing a Red Beret, dressed in traditional Italian garments. Creche figures were dressed in richly detailed versions of everyday and festive clothing from Naples and the surrounding Kingdom of Naples. These figures were hand-crafted and part of elaborate Christmas nativity scenes. They included peasants, nobles, merchants, and street vendors, each in socially accurate attire. Garments were created from real textiles: silk, velvet, and linen, and handwoven textiles.
This figure represents the man with remarkable realism and character, featuring a polychromed terracotta head and articulated wooden limbs. Great attention to detail is seen in his facial expression, hand gestures, and costume. He is dressed in layered garments including a brown suede-like vest, red neck tie, brown and khaki shirt, and rust and beige breeches. Under his breeches are bright blue stockings in brown boots with red strap. This male figure embodies the storytelling spirit and craftsmanship of this era in Naples. Figure is mounted on a custom wooden base for display.
