Part of June Hastings’ Collected & Considered — a refined, thoughtful mix of furniture and objects that bring depth, form, and a sense of history to a space.
An Italianate Rococo Revival jardinière on stand, crafted in mahogany with a warm, richly toned finish and remnants of original gilt highlighting. The upper vessel features a shaped and scrolled gallery with applied foliate ornament, resting on a separate stand with cabriole legs and a sculptural apron. The two-part construction includes a removable metal liner, confirming its intended use as a functional planter.
The silhouette is what distinguishes this piece—fluid, architectural, and highly decorative. It reads less as a utilitarian object and more as a sculptural element, equally suited to a planted arrangement or as a standalone accent in an entry, beside seating, or near a fireplace.
JUNE’S THOUGHTS
This is the kind of piece that brings movement into a room. The scrolling form has a rhythm to it that feels almost architectural, yet it’s compact enough to tuck into a corner or sit comfortably beside a chair. I especially like it planted simply—something soft and restrained—so the form can do the work. But it also holds its own as a sculptural object, ready for your home.
THE PRINCIPAL'S PERSPECTIVE
Italianate decorative forms continue to perform well as designers move toward layered interiors that favor sculptural accents over purely functional objects. This jardinière offers strong visual return relative to investment, with its carved silhouette and scale providing presence typically associated with larger furniture forms. Pieces of this type—particularly those retaining their original liner—remain a reliable category for both decorative use and long-term collectability.
