These vessels were typically made from heavy-gauge brass or bronze and, like this one, feature a hand-forged iron or steel handle.
The handle is secured with large copper or brass rivets, a hallmark of older, non-machine manufacturing.
Its condition is stunning, with a mottled dark surface and natural patina developed over decades of use and exposure to air. These pans were essential kitchenware for preserving summer fruits into jams and jellies, with brass favored for its believed ability to help prevent mold growth during cooking. They were also commonly used to make large batches of apple butter over an open hearth, as would have been the case in North Carolina, where it was acquired. See less
