This exceptional all-original early-production PK22 lounge chair by Poul Kjærholm for E. Kold Christensen represents a highly collectible and investment-worthy example of one of the most iconic Scandinavian Modern designs of the 20th century. Designed in 1955 and produced circa 1960, this particular chair is distinguished not only by its superb vintage condition, but by its rare double EKC stamp, an unusual and highly desirable feature that adds further provenance and appeal for discerning collectors. And also very importantly - the leather is original.
The original stainless steel frame, true to Kjærholm’s signature use of industrial materials with refined minimalism, retains its soft luster and crisp profile. The seat and backrest are clad in their original dark brown leather, showing elegant patina consistent with careful age and use. Signed twice with the EKC mark (E. Kold Christensen), this chair offers a rare level of documentation - something especially prized in the collector's market where unsigned examples often raise questions of authenticity or provenance.
With original production by E. Kold Christensen becoming increasingly difficult to source, PK22s like this one have become significantly more sought after. While Fritz Hansen currently produces authorized reissues, they lack the historical and collectible value of the EKC originals. For collectors and connoisseurs, the difference in long-term investment potential is substantial. We strongly recommend sourcing signed EKC examples, such as this one, over the later Fritz Hansen versions, and advise caution when purchasing any PK-22 where the signature is not clearly documented. If no stamp is shown in a listing, it is worth asking for a photo. If none is provided, it’s best to walk away.
This PK22 lounge chair would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as a side chair, dining, cafe or breakfast table chair, bedside chair, fireside chair, dressing or changing room chair, hallway chair, entryway or mudroom chair, nursing or reading chair, conference room chair, office or desk chair, guest chair, lobby chair, lounge chair or occasional chair ideal in virtually any setting.
