Pulled from an old family estate on Lake Champlain's Isle La Motte during a late winter weekend, these plates arrived wrapped in newspaper and instantly commanded the room.

Each 10-inch plate is thrown in Spode's finest bone china body — translucent, resonant, brilliantly white — and pressed into the signature Jewel mold: a scalloped rim encircled by concentric rings of delicate raised beadwork, swags, and star-punched latticework that catches the light like cut crystal. At the center of each plate, a single lush cabbage rose rendered in deep rose pink, painted by hand with the kind of confident, unhurried brushwork that was a hallmark of Copeland's skilled decorating department in the 1920s. No two bouquets are identical — slight variations in the scattered buds and foliage confirm the hand of individual decorators.

The backstamp — printed in magenta on the well of each plate — reads Spode's Jewel / Copeland / England with the British Royal Arms, consistent with Copeland production dating 1925–1928. The Billingsley Rose pattern was introduced in 1926 and would go on to be one of Spode's longest-running designs, but these early examples carry the depth of color and detail that later lithographic production never quite matched.

All four plates are in excellent antique condition — no chips, no cracks, no restoration. Crazing is minimal and consistent with age. A small amount of light surface wear to the glaze is present on one plate, as noted in condition details. These are working plates, not display pieces, and have clearly been treated that way — with care.

Stunning on a toile tablecloth (as shown), equally at home on bare linen or layered with transferware. An interior designer's dream for a single-night tablescape, a romantic luncheon, or a permanent addition to a collected dining room. See less
