This Chinese Export opium lamp is an exceptional example of late Qing Dynasty craftsmanship, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1870–1900. The piece reflects the refined design sensibilities of the late China Trade era, when traditional Chinese materials and motifs were adapted into highly decorative luxury objects for both domestic elites and international collectors.
At the center of the lamp is a finely hollowed reservoir of celadon-green nephrite jade, a stone long revered in Chinese culture for its strength, beauty, and spiritual symbolism. The jade body is framed by decorative silver mounts featuring finely hand-chased floral motifs—likely plum blossoms—along with scalloped edges characteristic of silverwork produced in the major treaty ports of Canton and Shanghai during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The combination of nephrite jade with finely worked silver fittings became a hallmark of luxury opium paraphernalia between approximately 1880 and 1900.
Above the reservoir sits a removable clear glass chimney, designed to protect and regulate the small, steady flame required to gently heat opium. The careful fit of the chimney and the presence of a stable footed base reflect the increasing sophistication of these objects during the late nineteenth century, when opium lamps evolved from simple utilitarian tools into finely crafted decorative works intended for affluent patrons.
During the late Qing period (1644–1911), opium lamps were the focal point of the smoking ritual. While many were produced in modest materials such as glass or pewter, examples incorporating jade and silver were considered luxury items typically owned by wealthy merchants or officials. The natural aged patina visible on the silver mounts is consistent with its age and is valued by collectors as evidence of original surfaces. Today, the lamp stands not only as a beautifully crafted decorative object but also as a rare historical artifact from the height of opium culture in late imperial China.
