Elevate your desk or console with this exquisite mid-to-late 19th-century Victorian Papier-Mâché Writing Slope. This "Japanned" masterpiece features a scalloped silhouette and a jet-black lacquered finish, heavily adorned with hand-painted gilt (gold leaf) filigree and vibrant Mother of Pearl (MOP) floral inlays. The iridescent shell work remains remarkably intact, catching the light with a luminous, multi-colored glow.
Designed for the sophisticated collector, this piece opens to reveal its original faded peachy/flesh velvet writing surface. The interior is remarkably complete, featuring the original removable pen tray and stationery compartments. Notably, the writing slope lifts to unveil a hidden storage well, finished in the same high-gloss crackled lacquer as the exterior—a hallmark of premium Victorian craftsmanship.
