This striking vintage étagère, dating to the late 1970s–1980s, features a sculptural postmodern design with polished brass/gold-tone metal framing and inset glass shelves. The piece is composed of two interlocking sections—a lower console base and an upper shelving unit—allowing for multiple configuration options depending on your space. The upper section can be positioned to either the left or right side of the base, creating a mirrored layout and shifting the visual weight of the piece. It can also be adjusted along the length of the base to expand or compress the overall width, making it especially versatile for different room layouts. This flexibility allows it to function equally well as a centered statement piece, an asymmetrical shelving unit, or even placed behind a sofa where the offset design adds architectural interest. The design is defined by its fluid, continuous lines and offset geometric forms, creating a layered, architectural silhouette that feels both airy and substantial. The open framework paired with glass shelves keeps the piece visually light, while the warm metallic finish adds a touch of glamour.
The overall form strongly recalls the work of Design Institute of America (DIA) and designer Milo Baughman, known for their sculptural brass and glass furniture of the period. While unmarked, the construction, materials, and design language are consistent with pieces produced in that tradition.
I especially love how dynamic this piece feels—the ability to reconfigure it gives it a custom, almost built-in quality while still maintaining the flexibility of a freestanding unit.

Structurally sound with light, age-appropriate wear to the brass-tone finish, including minor surface wear and subtle patina consistent with use. Two of the lower glass shelves appear to be later replacements. One does not sit perfectly within the original inset but functions well and aligns with the width of the piece. The second shows a slightly newer appearance and is a bit too long. See 10th and 11th photos. Both integrate seamlessly in use and do not detract from the overall presentation. less
