If you know Vladimir Kagan's work for United Furniture and Kagan-Dreyfuss, you'll recognize the DNA of these exceptional nightstands immediately: the sculptural arched base with outward-splayed tapered legs, the domed brass feet, the sense of a cabinet that has been lifted off the ground and given real architectural presence. This pair, unmarked but unquestionably in that design tradition, is among the most visually accomplished mid-century nightstands we've come across — combining a beautifully detailed brass grid inlay door with a base that is genuinely sculptural.
The brass inlay on each door is the detail that sets these apart. A precise three-by-three grid of brass lines is inlaid into the recessed walnut door panel, forming a lattice of warm gold against rich brown grain. It is restrained, geometric, and immensely elegant — the kind of detail that rewards close looking and that elevates the whole piece. The small original round brass knob at center ties the hardware palette together perfectly.
The base is where the Kagan spirit really sings. Four splayed tapered legs sweep outward from an arched structural apron below the open display platform, creating the dramatic lifted silhouette Kagan made iconic. Each leg ends in a domed brass foot that adds both visual punctuation and a note of material luxury. The effect is of a cabinet that floats — substantial but light, grounded but dynamic.
Inside each cabinet, a single adjustable shelf provides clean, practical storage. The walnut throughout is beautifully grained and well-preserved. These are genuinely versatile pieces — elegant enough for a designer bedroom, substantial enough for a living room as end tables, and refined enough for a study or library. An exceptional pair with real presence and pedigree.
