A striking mid-19th century hand-colored engraving depicting “Tuch-ee, Chef de Guerre Cherokee”, a Cherokee war chief, after the work of renowned American artist George Catlin.
This finely detailed portrait originates from the important ethnographic publication Natural History of Man by James Cowles Prichard, published in Europe in the 1840s. The present example, bearing French titling, reflects a Continental edition, adding an additional layer of rarity and desirability among collectors.
The composition captures the sitter with remarkable sensitivity—his gaze direct yet contemplative—adorned in traditional attire and feathered headdress, rendered with delicate linework and subtle hand-applied color.
Catlin’s original works were among the earliest artistic efforts to document Native American tribes of North America, making engravings such as this both historically significant and visually compelling. These prints were produced for European audiences fascinated by Indigenous cultures during the 19th century.
Presented here in its original, unframed state with visible deckled edges and natural age toning, this piece retains its authenticity and offers exceptional versatility for modern interior styling.
