An elegant and sculptural pair of wrought-iron armchairs possibly crafted by French master wrought-iron craftsman Gilbert Poillerat (1902-1988).
The chairs feature beautifully executed calligraphic scrollwork backs crowned with a distinctive ring crest and centered by a geometric lattice medallion. The iron is richly worked with graceful curves and hand-hammered texture, reflecting the refined craftsmanship associated with mid-century decorative iron ateliers.
A twisted X-form stretcher, joined by a forged central loop, provides both structural integrity and visual balance, while the scalloped apron beneath the seat adds a layer of decorative detail rarely seen in standard wrought-iron seating.
The sculptural quality of the ironwork combined with the neoclassical design vocabulary closely aligns with furniture produced by Poillerat and his design circle during the 1930s-1950s, when French decorative iron reached its artistic peak.
Many of Poillerat’s pieces exist with no obvious signature as he believed his work to be his signature. This pair is unmarked.
The more recently upholstered seats, in sea foam blue suede, complement the elegant iron frames, making the chairs equally suited for dining, accent seating, or decorative use in a sophisticated manner.
Very good vintage condition with beautiful patina.
