An exceptional early 19th century English George III grandfather clock. Features a beautiful flame mahogany case featuring an open pediment scrolled crown with brass rosettes and robust spire finials. The face which has a large glass door with striping inlay is flanked by Corinthian columns with brass capitals.
The hand painted enameled face has a sun and moon dial, roman numerals, brass hands and painted figures along each corner. Of the painted scholars along each corner there is a man reading a book with a cow or bull, a man drinking with a turkey, a man with a lion and a man reading a scroll. The face is marked Manchester and appears to be signed by an artist (E. Earl) from the area.
The long case has larger fluted Corinthian columns at the center around an arcaded door with striping and inlayed escutcheon plate. Neatly framed, raised and molded flame mahogany panels are placed throughout. The base has chamfered stiles over turned toupie feet.
The backside of the Dial where the works are met are marked William Francis of Birmingham. William was a dial maker from 1810-1831. The brass bell is engraved Thomas on the inside.
An exceptional timepiece that towers above most other longcases from this period.
