The underside bears the iron red anchor mark of the Chelsea Porcelain Factory, London, dating the piece to the Red Anchor period, 1752-1756.
The molded dish is formed as a cabbage leaf with softly ruffled edges shaded in green. The handle is modeled as a cut branch with the trompe l’oeil effect of a freshly cut stem. At the center, magenta leaf veins frame a colorful Rococo bouquet painted in red, yellow and green enamels. The delicate flowers reflect Chelsea’s fascination with botanical forms during the Georgian period.
Chelsea Porcelain was among the most celebrated English porcelain of the 18th century and was particularly admired for inventive dessert wares inspired by garden motifs. Leaf form dishes were produced as part of elaborate dessert services designed to create theatrical table displays.
