An antique Asian decorative sculpture depicting two intertwined panthers, hand-carved from a single block of dense tropical hardwood, often referred to in the trade as red palm wood. The composition shows one panther draped protectively over the other, forming a continuous, flowing mass with carefully controlled negative space, and is intentionally balanced to be displayed in multiple orientations — with either panther uppermost or resting on its side — allowing the form to read differently depending on placement.
The carving emphasizes movement and sculptural rhythm rather than fine anatomical detail, consistent with early 20th-century workshop carving traditions intended for decorative interiors. The surface retains a natural, softly lustrous patina developed through age and handling, without evidence of modern varnish. The eyes are inset, likely bone or shell, providing subtle contrast and expression.
Made for the export or decorative market, this piece bridges folk carving and early export modernism. Its horizontal orientation and substantial weight give it a grounded presence well suited to a shelf, console, or tabletop display and ready to find a place in your home. Circa 1900–1930.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
What draws me to this carving is the way the form reads before the subject. From a distance, it feels almost abstract — a single, flowing shape with weight and calm presence — and only gradually resolves into two animals in quiet interaction. I also appreciate that it was designed to rest comfortably in more than one orientation, allowing the sculpture to change character depending on how it’s placed, which makes it especially versatile in a collected interior.
