A striking mid-19th century American Empire chest of drawers featuring richly figured walnut burl veneer drawer fronts and a distinctive hand-carved scalloped crest. This compact three-drawer chest was likely produced by a regional cabinetmaker in the Northeastern United States, most likely New England, during the transitional Empire to early Victorian period.
The drawer fronts display beautifully bookmatched walnut burl veneer with dramatic swirling grain patterns, framed by applied oval moldings typical of mid-19th century American cabinetmaking. The remainder of the case is constructed in walnut with secondary woods used in the interior, following traditional furniture practices of the period.
The top is crafted from solid walnut boards with visible old-growth grain, developing a deep warm patina that only comes from nearly two centuries of age. Turned walnut drawer knobs remain intact and retain their original wooden threaded shanks — an early construction detail commonly found in furniture from the 1840s and 1850s.
The graceful scalloped back crest gives the piece architectural presence and suggests the chest may originally have served as a washstand or dressing chest. The silhouette reflects vernacular cabinet work of the period — refined yet handcrafted, with subtle variations that reveal its small-shop origins.
Interior construction shows wide solid boards and traditional drawer construction methods consistent with mid-19th century American furniture.
Because of its smaller footprint, this piece works beautifully today as:
• an entryway chest
• bedside dresser
• lamp table
• hallway storage cabinet
The combination of walnut burl veneer, solid walnut, and old-growth secondary woods gives the piece both visual richness and historic character.

The chest is structurally sound, very sturdy, and presents beautifully. The drawers operate well and the piece sits solidly and level. Surface wear, small marks, and areas of patina are present throughout, all typical for furniture of this age and contributing to its historic character. At some point during its long life, minor interior reinforcement hardware was added beneath the top and along interior supports to stabilize the structure. These additions are inside the cabinet and not visible during normal display. The piece is currently very stable and ready for everyday use. less
