The underside bears the … Read more Mid 18th Century Chelsea porcelain trompe l’oeil leaf dish decorated with a naturalistic study of radishes. The underside bears the iron red anchor mark of the Chelsea Porcelain Factory, London, dating the piece to the manufacturer’s Red Anchor period, 1752-1756.
At the center is a leaf with ruffled edges and a stem-form handle. White radish bulbs, seemingly three-dimensional, and magenta red veining complete the naturalistic center. In the Rococospirit of visual playfulness, the leaf and its radishes, in a trompe l’eoil effect, appear to rest on a molded interlaced arc border that frames the botanical decoration.
The Chelsea Porcelain Factory was renowned in the Georgian period for its inventive porcelain, producing naturalistic fruit, vegetable, and botanical wares for desert services. A charming example of the themes that made Chelsea one of the most celebrated porcelain factories of the 18th century.
