Elegant Japanese four-panel folding screen (byōbu) featuring a traditional kacho-ga (bird and flower) composition with a pair of mandarin ducks resting beneath blossoming branches along a hillside landscape. Mandarin ducks are a classic symbol of marital harmony, fidelity, and happiness in Japanese art.
Mid-20th Century, circa 1955–1975
The painting is hand-rendered on silk with mineral pigments, visible through the fine brushwork in the ducks’ feathering, foliage, and layered landscape elements. The composition sits against a softly luminous gold ground with delicate cloud forms and seasonal blossoms.
The work bears a vertical artist signature and red seal (hanko), executed in traditional format.
Panels are bordered with woven brocade textile mounting and framed by a lacquered wood structure with engraved brass kanagu hardware and decorative nail covers, typical of Japanese folding screen construction.
Provenance: Acquired from the estate of a Southern California Asian art and ceramics importer, whose collection included Japanese decorative arts and export pieces.
Screens of this size were often produced in Kyoto and Osaka workshops during the post-war period for both Japanese interiors and Western collectors.
A beautiful decorative piece that works well as wall art, a room divider, or an architectural backdrop in modern interiors.
