A finely made Victorian burl walnut decorative box featuring an unusual carved rabbit handle, circa 1880.
Two sculpted rabbits face inward, each holding one end of the arched handle in its mouth. The playful carving creates the impression that the pair are lifting the handle together. Small bone inlaid eyes add life and character to the figures. This box is veneered in richly figured burl walnut, the swirling grain giving the surface natural movement and warmth. It rests on small bun feet and opens to a clean wood interior suitable for jewelry, desk objects, or other small treasures. Note: With the handle in up position, this box measures 6" high.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
From my perspective as a dealer and collector, what I respond to most about this piece is its charm. What’s not to love about a box like this? Both functional and sculptural, the rabbit handle makes it truly distinctive. It’s the sort of object that quietly becomes a focal point wherever it is placed — on a desk, credenza, or cabinet — always noticed and appreciated for its character.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Boxes of this type were often produced in Central European workshops — particularly in Germany or Austria — for export to the British market during the late Victorian period, circa 1880–1900. Several construction details support that origin. The rabbits are separate applied carvings with the handle resting between them like a bridge and held in their mouths, a motif seen on German novelty boxes and cigar boxes of the period. The small inlaid bone eyes are another clue, as English novelty carving rarely used eye inlay while German and Austrian workshops commonly did. The simplified carving of the rabbits is also characteristic of late 19th-century Central European work. Their ears are flattened and swept backward, carved as a single plane rather than deeply undercut.
The box itself reflects careful cabinetmaking. A double-line framed panel surrounds the lid — a small decorative detail requiring additional tooling — and the burl walnut veneer was well selected for visual effect. Together these elements suggest production by a skilled workshop producing higher-quality decorative boxes for the export market.
