There is something wonderfully evocative about the rituals of tea in England — the quiet pause in the day, the familiar clink of china, and always, a biscuit close at hand. This early 20th century English earthenware biscuit barrel carries that tradition with both charm and history.
Cylindrical in form, the barrel is crafted from lead-glazed white earthenware, gently shaped with an incurved base and shoulder that give it a pleasing, balanced silhouette. The surface is delicately printed and hand-painted with sprays of roses and leaves, set against a pale ground that softly shades into warm tan — a palette that feels both refined and inviting. A metal mount completes the piece, adding both function and a touch of contrast to the ceramic body.
To the underside, the marks tell its story: “WITH PEEK FREANS CO’S COMPLIMENTS” printed in brown, alongside the Fielding insignia — a crown over SF & Co. England — and a square painter’s mark, faint but present. This barrel was issued in 1908 by Peek Freans, the well-known biscuit manufacturer, as part of a special promotional offer advertised through a series of postcards — a delightful intersection of marketing and domestic life at the turn of the century.
Biscuit barrels such as this were designed to keep biscuits fresh while presenting them beautifully at the tea table, often becoming a centerpiece of everyday hospitality.
Hand selected in England and imported with care, this piece carries with it not only the artistry of its making, but also a glimpse into the rituals and rhythms of Edwardian life — a small but meaningful object from a time when even the simplest moments were given thoughtful form.

The earthenware shows a well-preserved glaze with light surface wear and minor marks. The printed and painted decoration remains clear and vibrant. The metal mount shows age-appropriate wear and patination. Minor imperfections may be present, all in keeping with its age. Overall, a charming and well-preserved example. less
