18th C. Dutch Delftware Blue & White Chinoiserie Bowl
This authentic 18th-century tin-glazed earthenware bowl is a soulful example of Dutch Delftware produced during the height of the European fascination with the Orient. The exterior is hand-painted in a rich cobalt underglaze with a spirited Chinoiserie landscape, featuring a traditional tiered pagoda, simplified mountain peaks, and stylized "bobbing" trees.
The interior rim is adorned with a rhythmic trellis or "criss-cross" border, while the center well is anchored by a singular, bold floral spray. The thick, creamy white tin glaze exhibits the characteristic "pin-pricking" and organic surface texture that distinguishes period 18th-century production from later 19th-century mass-produced versions.
Dimensions
Diameter: 6 inches
Height: 3 inches
Condition
Generally Good Antique Condition. Consistent with authentic tin-glazed earthenware of this age, there are small chips and "nibbles" to the glaze along the rim and the footrim. These minor glaze losses are widely accepted by collectors as evidence of the piece's history and material. The cobalt blue remains exceptionally vibrant and the glaze retains a high-gloss finish.
Historical Significance
Era: Produced ca. 1740–1780 in the Netherlands.
Artistic Style: European Folk-Art Chinoiserie, a style that interpreted Chinese export porcelain motifs through the lens of provincial Dutch craftsmanship.
An evocative piece of ceramic history, this Delft bowl brings a touch of 18th-century global trade and artisanal charm to any "Blue and White" gallery wall or traditional tabletop.
