This massive, nomadic harvest bowl is a stunning piece of utilitarian history. Long before modern storage, oversized, tightly woven baskets like this were the absolute lifelines of rural and nomadic agrarian communities. Designed for heavy daily use, a bowl of this impressive scale would have been used for gathering large crop yields, winnowing wheat, or holding communal supplies. Woven entirely by hand from thick, natural grasses and reeds, the repetitive, tight coils create a mesmerizing texture and a warm, earthy color palette.
The most incredible feature of this specific basket is the original earthen mud sealing baked into the bottom. Historically, artisans would rub wet clay or mud into the base to waterproof the basket, prevent fine grains from slipping through the woven cracks, and protect the fibers from rot when placed on damp ground. You will also notice the natural, frayed wear along the top rim—a beautiful testament to decades of hard work and history.
At a sprawling 30 inches across, this piece commands attention. It makes a spectacular oversized centerpiece for a large round dining table or a substantial coffee table. Because of its wide, relatively shallow profile, it is also highly sought-after as three-dimensional, textural wall art.
