Inspired by the sculptural traditions of Neapolitan Capodimonte porcelain, the animated cherubs climb the architectural scrolls of the base in a composition reminiscent of Italian Baroque altar sculpture.
An exuberant expression of Italian Splendor, this sculptural porcelain table lamp captures the theatrical elegance that made Italian decorative lighting so sought after by designers in the mid-20th century. The lamp features three lively putti (cherubs) climbing and dancing around a richly modeled pedestal base, their outstretched arms creating a sense of movement and celebration. The composition is anchored by classical architectural forms—scrolling volutes, garland ornament, and a molded plinth—giving the piece a distinctly Italian Neoclassical influence.
The glossy white porcelain finish heightens the sculptural quality of the figures, allowing light to play across the surface much like a small classical marble sculpture. Details such as the cherubs’ expressive poses, the fluted central column, and the garland frieze reflect the Baroque revival and Hollywood Regency taste that dominated luxury interiors from the 1940s through the 1960s.
Pieces like this were often produced by Italian ceramic houses such as Capodimonte workshops in Naples or by other Italian porcelain manufacturers supplying decorative lighting for export to the United States during the post-war design boom. Many examples were later mounted as lamps by high-end lighting companies and luxury department stores catering to traditional interiors.
Because of its sculptural presence, this lamp works beautifully on a console, library table, or bedside table—adding a touch of European drama and classical charm. Designers often favor pieces like this because they function almost as a small figurative sculpture that also provides lighting, making it both decorative and practical.
