Part of June Hastings’ “Collected Country House” — a curated grouping exploring layered English and American country interiors.
An American wall-mounted candle box dating to circa 1800, constructed of pine with early lap joinery and cut nail assembly. The form features a tall arched backboard with hanging aperture above a rectangular candle compartment, resting on a molded base. The sides retain an early faux-mahogany grained surface executed over a warm red ground, a decorative finish traditionally used to elevate utilitarian pine forms. Traces of this graining remain visible across the top, now softly worn from two centuries of handling. The interior shows natural darkening consistent with candle storage.
The stepped base suggests the box originally included a small lower drawer, now absent. The piece displays beautifully both hung on a wall or resting on a surface.
Height measured at tallest point of backboard is 12"
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
What gives this piece strength is not perfection but presence. The early grained surface — still strongest along the sides — suggests a household that valued refinement, even in a practical object. The missing drawer does not diminish its integrity; instead, it speaks to two centuries of use. Hung on a wall or resting on a surface, it carries the quiet authority that only early American forms possess.
