A fine and historically significant Victorian sailor's woolwork picture (commonly known as a "woolie"), dating to the mid-19th century.

This piece is an early example of Berlin woolwork executed in a tight, consistent chain stitch and with good color. It depicts a detailed starboard view of the HMS Hero under full sail, set against a sky composed of varying shades of blue and white. The vessel is shown flying a Blue Ensign and is titled along the bottom margin: "H.M.S. HERO".

Historical Context:

The Ship: The HMS Hero, launched in 1858 and sold in 1871, was a 91-gun screw-propelled second-rate ship of the line.

The 1860 Royal Tour: This vessel is most famous for conveying Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII, known as "Bertie") on his historic tour of North America in 1860.

A Royal First:

With Queen Victoria unable to travel, the 19-year-old Prince embarked on the Hero on July 10, 1860, to represent the crown. This journey marked the first time a member of the British royal family visited North America, with stops including Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa (where he laid the cornerstone of the Parliament building), and the United States, where he stayed at the White House with President James Buchanan. The voyage was considered a triumph that helped the young Prince gain maturity and self-confidence.
