The anthropomorphic subject and spirited detailing place these pieces firmly within the tradition of Northern French faience.
Each jar is sculpted as a seated pig dressed as a country gentleman. The larger figure wears a deep green apron with blue straps, holding a straw broom while smoking a pipe, evoking a rustic caretaker. The smaller companion is dressed in a mauve double-breasted coat accented with black buttons and a molded watch chain, also holding a pipe. Their half-closed eyes and subtly amused expressions lend narrative charm and personality.
Formed in glazed faience with a creamy tin-glazed surface, the bodies are enriched by hand-painted accents in warm honey, blush, and earthy tones. The glossy finish enhances the dimensional modeling of the snouts, clothing folds, and accessories. Both figures open at the head to reveal hollow interiors, consistent with their original function as tobacco jars.
The underside of the larger example bears the impressed number “4409 10” along with a small painted mark. Light wear to the base edges and minor surface variations are present, all consistent with age and use and reinforcing the authentic antique character of the pair.
Whimsical yet substantial, this antique French faience set in the manner of Onnaing would make a distinctive addition to a study, library, bar, or curated ceramic collection.
