A striking hand-stitched textile portrait depicting an 18th century French Revolutionary or early Napoleonic officer. This dimensional work is composed of wool appliqué, velvet, cotton, and embroidered detailing, all entirely hand sewn with visible whip stitching around the figure and garment edges.
The officer is shown in a blue tailcoat with cream piping, red waistcoat, cream breeches, and cravat, with a bicorne hat and sword at his side. The classic blue, red, and cream palette strongly references late 18th century French military regalia, rendered here in a 20th century folk-art interpretation.
The layered fabrics create depth and sculptural presence against the velvet ground. A bold decorative piece for traditional, maximalist, equestrian, or historic interiors.
The textile has not been examined outside of the frame.
Framed Measurements:
16.75 inches tall x 11.75 inches wide
Visible Textile Area:
14.75 inches tall x 9.5 inches wide
The piece is housed under anti-glare glass for sun protection. The silver-tone frame shows visible loss and wear to the silver finish around the edges consistent with age and handling. There appears to be a fabric-wrapped inner liner within the frame, which may have been original to its presentation.
The textile itself appears stable from visible inspection.
Overall, a strong decorative historical textile with excellent graphic impact and entirely hand-worked construction.
There is a second soldier done by the same folk artist listed separately
