A striking late 19th century Japanese Imari porcelain octagonal bowl of generous scale and exceptional decorative complexity.
The faceted form frames a richly painted interior divided into alternating landscape and patterned reserves, rendered in traditional Imari tones of iron red, underglaze blue, celadon green, and soft yellow. Bamboo groves, maple foliage, distant pavilions, and stylized waters unfold across the interior walls in rhythmic panels, interspersed with red oval cartouches featuring cranes in flight over seigaiha wave grounds.
At the center rests a charming karashishi (guardian lion) poised atop a brocade ball — a traditional symbol of protection, strength, and prosperity. The composition feels both animated and balanced, with each reserve offering its own miniature narrative while contributing to the whole.
The exterior continues the decorative dialogue with flowing water motifs and stylized flora, while the foot reveals a classic underglaze blue border.
This bowl is substantial in presence and architectural in form. The octagonal shaping gives it structure and weight, making it equally compelling as a centerpiece or displayed within a curated collection of Japanese porcelain.
Late 19th century, Meiji period.
