A refined French clock in gilded and patinated bronze from the mid-19th century, inspired by the famous portrait "The Red Boy" by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1825), which depicts the young Charles William Lambton, son of John Lambton, Member of Parliament and later first Earl of Durham. The work's title derives from a curiosity: Lawrence had initially painted the boy's clothing yellow, but at his father's insistence, changed the color to a vivid crimson, which later defined and made the painting famous. The portrait is now held at the National Gallery in London, having been acquired from a private collection in July 2021 for £9.3 million.
The upper part of the clock faithfully reproduces the pose and clothing of the young Lambton, although the sitter appears mirrored compared to the original. The rock on which the boy sits in the painting is replaced by a collection of dark patinated bronze trunks and bushes, which contrasts with the gilding of the figure and the case underneath.
