An elegant French gilded bronze pendulum clock from the Empire period, signed Dubue on the dial. The female figure, dressed in robes reminiscent of classical antiquity, holds an envelope and a letter, evoking the role of messenger of wisdom or the Muses, a highly popular allegorical subject in French neoclassical iconography between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The clock is housed within a semi-column reminiscent of classical architecture, a symbol of stability and order, a recurring element in bronze production from the Empire period.
The dial is signed Dubue. The movement features a lever escapement with silk thread suspension and strikes the hour and half on the hour.
