This rare 19th-century Wedgwood cheese dish is a striking example of neoclassical design, combining refined ceramic artistry with elegant metalwork. Crafted in the iconic blue and white jasperware palette, the domed cover is decorated with crisp white classical figures and floral motifs set against a rich cobalt ground, reflecting Wedgwood’s enduring fascination with antiquity. The piece is simply stamped “Wedgwood,” consistent with earlier production, and is complemented by an ornate silverplate handle that adds sculptural presence and functionality. The dish rests on its original silverplate tray, whose softly scalloped edge enhances the overall sense of formality and period elegance.
Measuring 8.5 inches deep, 6.5 inches wide, and 6 inches high, this dish makes a sophisticated statement whether displayed in a cabinet or used as a decorative accent on a sideboard. There are two holes at the center of each flower motif on the top of the lid for aeration purposes. As expected with an authentic antique, it shows honest age-related wear, including small losses and signs of use. There is a visible hairline crack along the right side that continues upward and across the top, which has been fully disclosed and does not detract from the visual appeal or historical integrity of the piece. Please review the photos for further further condition assessment.
A scarce and desirable survivor, this Wedgwood cheese dish is a wonderful example of 19th-century English taste, prized for its classical beauty, craftsmanship, and collectible appeal.
