The Story of the Piece:
Exhibiting the peak of Postmodern Hollywood Regency opulence, this exceptional graduated trio of lidded canisters by the renowned Maitland-Smith is an architectural statement in artisan craftsmanship.
Each vessel is meticulously constructed using the brand’s signature tessellated stone technique, where hand-cut tiles of stone are expertly inlaid over a structural frame to create a seamless, mosaic-like surface. The canisters are finished in a rare and vibrant Imperial Red lacquer—a boutique color-way far more elusive than the standard neutral stone.
The set is further elevated by hand-applied 24k gold leaf Chinoiserie motifs featuring Imperial Koi fish, framed by intricate decorative borders. Resting upon ornate brass fish-form feet—which add a sculptural lift—and crowned with textured finials and silk tassels, these pieces possess a monumental presence. In the masterful manner of Karl Springer with an opulent Tony Duquette-inspired aesthetic, this matched set is a rare find for high-end shelf styling, libraries, or grand foyer consoles.
Condition Details:
Excellent vintage condition. Shows minor, age-appropriate surface "fleabites" to the lacquer on some rims and lid edges, consistent with authentic late 20th-century tessellated stone craftsmanship. These tiny signs of use are typical for this medium and do not detract from the set's grandeur.
