A charming antique Haviland Limoges porcelain platter, hand-painted in France circa 1900 with a delightful gathering of rabbits nestled among grasses. Executed in soft naturalistic tones, the scene captures the gentle Belle Époque fascination with nature and pastoral life. The scalloped form is finished with hand-applied gilt accents that frame the composition without overpowering its delicate painting.
Equally appealing for spring display, nursery décor, or layered tabletop styling, this piece reflects the refined artistry associated with Haviland’s finest decorated wares.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
As an artist myself, I’m always drawn to pieces where the painting feels gentle rather than formal and this one immediately stopped me. The rabbits are rendered with such softness and observation that you can sense the hand of the painter behind them rather than a factory design. Haviland often supplied fine porcelain blanks that were decorated individually by studio artists, which is why scenes like this have a quiet individuality. No two are ever quite alike. I’m honestly surprised this example wasn’t signed; if I had painted these rabbits, I certainly would have.
I must also admit to a personal affection here. I grew up with pet rabbits, and the calm intimacy of the group feels very true to their nature. It’s a piece that carries warmth and quietly makes a room feel more human.
