An exceptional late 19th-century Vienna-style cabinet plate richly decorated with a finely hand-painted central scene of a woman feeding a parrot on a perch. The composition is framed by an opulent tooled gilt Greek key border and a deep cobalt blue rim, creating a striking contrast that enhances the jewel-like quality of the piece.
The underside bears the hand-painted inscription in German:
“Dame mit Papagei”
nach Fr. van Mieris (d’Aeltere)
and is marked with Thallmaier’s red figure studio mark.
The scene is after "A Woman in a Red Jacket Feeding a Parrot" by Frans van Mieris the Elder, in the collection of the National Gallery in London. The original 17th-century Dutch oil on copper painting is celebrated for its exquisite detail and luminous realism — qualities beautifully translated here into porcelain by the Thallmaier porcelain painting studio, a decorating atelier specialized in finely hand-painted enamel decoration on high-quality porcelain. It operated in Munich, a major fine arts center at the time—shaped in large part by the artistic patronage of King Ludwig II.
Works from the Thallmaier Studio often feature scenes inspired by Old Master paintings, rendered in a rich academic style. This example has all the desirable qualities—an appealing subject, beautifully executed, and complete with the red Thallmaier Studio mark.
This cabinet plate is intended for display. It may be mounted on a stand within a vitrine or china cabinet, featured in a wall grouping, displayed atop a mantel, console, bookcase or similar. The rich cobalt ground and gilding pair especially well with traditional and classical interiors, while also providing a dramatic accent in eclectic settings.
This piece will particularly appeal to collectors of Vienna-style porcelain and fine European ceramics, admirers of Dutch Golden Age genre painting, connoisseurs of Thallmaier’s work, and designers seeking a refined conversation piece. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
The last photo shows a similarly shaped antique bronze parrot perch-style ring holder, which is listed separately. This listing is for the cabinet plate. Purchase both to create a charming vignette in your home!
