A centerpiece of exceptional folk art provenance, this handcrafted earthenware vessel was created by the renowned Pennsylvania master potter James Christian Seagraves (JCS). This multi-functional object serves as a sculptural figurine, an Ikebana-style flower holder, and a candlestick all rendered in Seagraves' signature "modern primitive" aesthetic.
The piece features a hand-sculpted songbird perched on a naturalistic log base, finished in a warm, earthy high-gloss glaze.
Measuring a full 8" tall, with an oblong base that is 5 1/2" x 4 1/4", it is in excellent condition.
As a key figure in the mid-20th-century redware revival, Seagraves' work is prized for its anatomical charm and artisan quality. Fully signed on the underside with the artist's hand-incised "JCS" initials and model "123," this is a sophisticated investment for collectors of American studio ceramics and regional folk art.
