A sculptural pair of mid-20th century Japanese porcelain guardian lions (often called “foo dogs”), rendered in luminous blanc de chine glaze. In the traditional opposing stance, each lion crouches with alert expression, open mouth, and deeply carved scrolling mane. The high-gloss white glaze softens the muscular form and gives the figures a clean, sculptural presence.
At 7 inches wide and 6.5 inches high, they are substantial enough to anchor a console, bookcase, or mantel without overpowering the surface. Their scale also makes them especially versatile for layered interiors, flanking a stack of art books, framing a low bowl, or guarding a hallway entry table.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
These are not just pretty faces — but watchful ones. Guardian lions were traditionally placed at entrances as symbols of protection, strength, and vigilance. They weren’t meant to be purely decorative; they were meant to stand guard.
What I love about this pair is that they carry that symbolism indoors without feeling heavy or ornate. There’s a quiet comfort in surrounding yourself with objects that feel intentional — pieces that suggest protection, stability, and grounding, even if only subconsciously.
