Crafted in France circa 1880, the chair features a slender ebonized wood frame embellished with delicate hand-painted gilt chinoiserie motifs, reflecting the fascination with Asian-inspired decoration during the Second Empire.

The gracefully curved crest rail features a scalloped lower edge decorated with gilt scenes depicting Asian figures, pavilions, and foliage. The open back is fitted with six finely turned spindles, accented with gold scrollwork and connected by a shaped lower rail. The chair stands on slender, gently curved legs joined by turned front and double side stretchers, providing stability while maintaining a light, graceful silhouette.

The seat has been newly upholstered in smooth black leather and finished with decorative brass nailhead trim, complementing the original ebonized finish and gilt ornamentation. The contrast between the rich black surfaces and warm gold decoration emphasizes the chair’s distinctive Napoleon III character.

The antique chair is in very good condition commensurate with age and use, with light wear to the painted and gilt surfaces consistent with its age. A charming accent piece for a dressing room, entryway, bedroom, or traditional interior.
