Scottish Apothecary Amethyst Glass Bottles
A matched pair of Scottish apothecary display bottles in deeply saturated amethyst (blackberry) glass, made in the classic globular “shop bottle” form with broad, spherical bodies, short tapered necks, and thick, rolled and fire-polished rims. Each retains its original printed paper label identifying the Stranraer chemist and the intended preparation, underscoring their working role within a late Victorian to early 20th century dispensary or shop interior. One label reads “Not To Be Taken” and specifies “Liniment (Lin. Indian.)” with the retailer line “Chard Kerr & Son, Dispensing Chemists” and the address “George Street, Stranraer.” The companion bottle is labeled “Tinct. Aurant.” (tincture of orange), with “Richard... Son, Chemists” and “Apothecaries’ Hall, Stranraer.” The use of dark amethyst glass is characteristic for pharmacy storage and display, helping to reduce light exposure for sensitive compounds while presenting a visually cohesive suite of preparations on shelves or in a shop window. Retailed and labeled for Chard Kerr & Son of Stranraer, Scotland.
